Center Point-Urbana smothers Mount Vernon, 53-30

Girls' basketball: Stormin' Pointers force 25 turnovers in opener

MOUNT VERNON — Shooting comes, and shooting goes.

But, as Center Point-Urbana Coach Philip Klett said, “If we play defense the way we did tonight, we’re always going to give ourselves a chance.”

Class 4A third-ranked CPU held Mount Vernon to 26-percent shooting and forced the Mustangs into 25 turnovers in claiming a 53-30 Wamac Conference cross-divisional girls’ basketball verdict Tuesday night at Mount Vernon High School.

The Stormin’ Pointers (1-0), in short, were suffocating, alternating between an aggressive man-to-man and half-court trap.

“We put a lot of on-the-ball pressure on them,” said sophomore Adrianna Katcher, who collected four steals to go with 10 points. “Nothing has really changed; we just talk a lot on defense.”

Klett said, “We keep track of deflections. The girls got their hands on the ball a lot. Now, we’ve got to do a better job of it without fouling.”

CPU was a 3A state semifinalist last year and returned virtually intact. The Stormin’ Pointers led from start to finish Tuesday.

A 9-2 run got the Mustangs (0-1) within 14-11, but CPU scored the next nine points, took a 27-17 lead into intermission, and pulled away steadily from there.

“They’re good, they’re big, and they’re ranked third for a reason,” said first-year Mustangs coach Matt Haddy. “They’re good at what they do. But I thought we played extremely hard, and that’s our goal.”

Olivia Brecht paced the Stormin’ Pointers with 12 points. Karly Millkin joined Katcher with 10. Drake recruit Allie Wooldridge posted eight points and seven rebounds.

Kristen Elliott paced Mount Vernon with 10 points. Noelle Ossenkop grabbed a game-high eight boards.

CPU faces defending 4A state champion North Scott as part of Rivalry Saturday at Coe College. Mount Vernon is at Iowa City Liberty on Monday.
