Somehow, the bar stays up for Linn-Mar's Skyler Presler at MVC Indoor

Linn-Mar sophomore clears 5-5

CEDAR FALLS — Imagine three wheels dangling off the cliff, but the car staying on firm land.

That was the bar after Skyler Presler hit it.

“I don’t know how it stayed up there,” she said. “I really don’t.”

It did hang on the high-jump standard, though. By a thread, on her last attempt at 5 feet, 5 inches — a winning effort at the Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ indoor track and field meet Tuesday night at the UNI-Dome.

“I definitely exceeded what I thought I would accomplish today,” said Presler, a sophomore at Linn-Mar. “My steps were a little long at first, but I cleaned them up and had a really good day.”

No team scores were kept. And as is usually the case at this meet, most competitors ran far less than a full program.

Dubuque Wahlert had the best meet, winning six of 18 events. Linn-Mar, Iowa City West and Cedar Falls claimed three each.

Presler was a state runner-up last year as a freshman, clearing 5-4 at state and logging a personal best of 5-6.

She said she has “5-7 or 5-8” on her mind this season, and was reasonably close at 5-6 1/2 on all three of her tries Tuesday.

“I’ve got to keep working on my steps and get my head back,” she said after prevailing in a high-jump competition that lasted more than 2 hours.

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Reagan Gorman had a busy day for an early-season meet, pulling away midway through the 3,000 and winning it in 10:35.31. She was second in the 1,500, fifth in the 600.

“I’m happy with that,” she said. “I’m ahead of where I’ve been at this point in the past.”

Gorman ran the first 1,800 of the 3,000 on the shoulder of Linn-Mar freshman Micah Poellet, then surged to the lead for good.

“I had a slow lap before that, and Coach said I had to go,” Gorman said. “So I went.”

West’s Chandler Haight ran away with the shot-put title with a heave of 40 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

“It wasn’t really what I was wanting,” said Haight, a senior and a Drake University recruit. “I wasn’t throwing at normal speed; it wasn’t clicking as well as I wanted.”
