First throw is state meet winning throw for Clear Creek Amana's Ainsley Schrock

Sophomore beats old PR by nearly 5 feet

DES MOINES — Ainsley Schrock didn’t waste any time.

The sophomore from Clear Creek Amana set a personal best by nearly 5 feet and won the Class 3A girls’ discus at the state track and field meet Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium.

Her first throw was the best throw: 132 feet, 4 inches.

“I could feel it that today was a good day,” Schrock said. “I watched myself do it in my head, and then when I did it I was super pumped.

“I thought (a state title) was possible, but it was going to be a stretch. There are a lot of good girls out here, and I’m glad I could do it and pull ahead of everybody.”

Schrock was the lone area winner in the 3A girls’ competition Thursday. With five events complete, Crestwood leads the team race with 22 points, followed by Sioux City Heelan (18) and five-time defending champion Davenport Assumption (12).

Schrock led by nearly 10 feet after the preliminaries. Webster City’s Cassidy Nerland made the closest bid in the finals at 128-5.

Center Point-Urbana’s Adrianna Katcher ran second to Crestwood’s Ellie Friesen in the 3,000. Friesen was timed in 10:15.43, Katcher in 10:35.27.

And may the record show that Camille Mac became Iowa City Liberty’s first state placewinner. Mac was fifth in the 3,000 in 10:45.55.

“It’s great to be the first,” said Mac, a freshman. “My time wasn’t a PR, but I’m happy with my place.”

Anamosa was third in the 3,200 relay.
