Center Point-Urbana jumps on Waterloo Columbus in victorious girls' soccer state quarterfinal

Late goal by CPU senior Allie Wooldridge wins it, 2-1, sends Stormin' Pointers to 1A state semifinal

DES MOINES — At the opening whistle, Center Point-Urbana had all the energy.

An aggressive, determined Stormin’ Pointers girls’ soccer team gave every indication early on that this game with Waterloo Columbus would be different from the 2-0 loss on May 22.

“We just really wanted to beat them considering the outcome earlier in the season,” said CPU sophomore Adrianna Katcher, who posted a goal and an assist as the fifth-seeded Stormin’ Pointers defeated No. 4 Waterloo Columbus, 2-1, in a Class 1A state quarterfinal Thursday at Cownie Soccer Park. “We prepared during practices to better what we didn’t do right in the first game. That helped us have energy.”

Katcher gave CPU a 1-0 lead with a fantastic first-half hustle play. She chased an Abigail Weideman pass down the left sideline, kept the ball from crossing the backline, dribbled back into play, turned and fired a long, rainbow shot that carried over the Columbus goalkeeper’s outstretched arms into the right side of the net.

It was the 15th goal this season for Katcher.

“I just saw that I had a gap and I knew if I at least got it in the box, one of my teammates could finish it off,’ Katcher said. “It just kept curving in.”

Waterloo Columbus (12-6) took advantage of an energy lull early in the second half and scored when senior Olivia Fain headed a corner kick from sophomore Maddie Burr into the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 29 minutes left.

At the second-half water break, CPU regrouped and rediscovered its energy.

“We just talked about connecting and not trying to rush through everything,” Katcher said.

CPU regained control of the action over the final 20 minutes, which paid off in a big way when Katcher found senior Allie Wooldridge ahead of the pack in the middle of the penalty box for the go-ahead score with 9:11 left in the contest.

“If AJ has the ball, then I’m going to the other side of the net,” Wooldridge said. “She’s going to give me a perfect ball every time.”

The goal was the team-high 21st this season for Wooldridge, a Drake women’s basketball signee. The assist was Katcher’s 15th this season, which also leads the team.

CPU (17-4) will play No. 1 Davenport Assumption (16-2) Friday at 11 in a 1A state semifinal. Assumption defeated the Stormin’ Pointers, 3-0, in last year’s 1A state championship game.

“We’ll get home, we’ll get them showered and iced,” CPU Co-Coach Todd Mitchell said. “We’ll come back tomorrow and do our job again. We know it’s a big order, but today was too and we’re going to celebrate that for a few minutes.”
