No. 1 Crestwood rolls past South Tama in girls' state basketball quarterfinals

DES MOINES — Crestwood was as good as advertised, as good as South Tama Coach Todd Dale was afraid of.
'What we feared, they delivered,' Dale said after the top-ranked Cadets pounded the Trojans, 66-28, in a Class 3A quarterfinal at the girls' state basketball tournament Tuesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
Sophomore post Sharon Goodman collected 20 points and 10 rebounds, Shannon Pisney added 19 points and Ellie Friesen flirted with a triple-double as the Cadets rolled to their 24th win this season without a loss.
'Goodman was a mismatch we just couldn't deal with,' Dale said.
This was never a contest. Crestwood led 14-3 after one quarter, 40-12 at halftime. The Cadets held South Tama (15-10) to 18-percent shooting (7 of 39).
'They were really good,' said South Tama's Jessica Musgrave, who managed 14 points and 10 rebounds. 'Definitely, the big girl (Goodman) gave us trouble. And they had some good ball-handlers.
The main one is Friesen, who tallied nine points, nine rebounds and 10 assists, the last of which tied a 3A tournament record.
'Being pass-first, that's a role I've taken on,' said Friesen, who pushed her season assist total to 218. 'It helps the team, and I like that.
'Our defense is always fantastic. We can rely on that to get our offense going.'
Musgrave was the focus of that defense Tuesday. The junior was 4-of-20 from the field.
Crestwood will face No. 8 North Polk (22-3) in a semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Comets beat Davenport Assumption, 64-47, Tuesday.
South Tama returns four starters for next season.
'This was supposed to be a rebuilding year, and we got here,' Musgrave said. 'We can be better next year, but we can't just think about it. We have to make it happen.'
