DES MOINES — There was no worry in the Marion locker room at halftime. No frustration.

“We weren’t doing anything wrong,” Chloe Rice said. “We just weren’t hitting a lot of shots.”

And then, they were. And a competitive game suddenly turned into a rout.

Top-ranked Marion tied a state-tournament record for 3-pointers, draining 14 (including nine in the second half) in a 71-39 Class 4A quarterfinal conquest of No. 14 Fairfield at the girls’ state basketball tournament Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

The perimeter display matched the 14 treys hit by Mason City in a 2013 5A quarterfinal against Iowa City West.

Leading just 21-17 at intermission, Marion (24-0) exploded for 50 second-half points.

“We knew if we kept pushing and kept doing what we do, we could start extending the score,” said Kayba Laube, who hit four treys.

Marion advances to face No. 5 Center Point-Urbana (22-3) in a semifinal at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The Stormin’ Pointers romped past No. 6 Boone, 69-47, Monday.

The Indians own two victories this season against CPU, 52-35 and 53-50.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Marion Coach Corby Laube said. “I’ve probably told you 100 times, we have a ton of respect for them. There won’t be any surprises.”

Rice nailed long balls on Marion’s first two possessions of the second half to make it 27-17, and the Indians were off and gunning.

Marion outscored Fairfield, 30-9, in the third quarter, extending the margin to 51-26. Leah Van Weelden hit the record-tying 3-pointer with 3:54 left in the game.

“Before the game, we reminded them that it was a 32-minute game, and that it was very possible that it would be close for a while,” Coach Laube said.

“The girls kept their focus. They knew that they could play better than they did in the first half, and I thought we defended a lot better in the second half.”

Marion is an extremely deep team, and that was reflected again Monday. Ten players scored, and the Indians tallied 31 bench points, including 13 by freshman Riley Wright.

Rice paced the Indians with 15 points (12 in the second half), and Kayba Laube tallied 14.

Amber Nicole Buch led Fairfield (19-5) with 14 points, about six below her average. She was 4 of 14 from the field.
