Wednesday's Iowa high school girls' state basketball scores and recaps

The girls’ state basketball first round wrapped up Wednesday with two Class 2A games and all four Class 1A quarterfinals.

No. 2 Central Decatur 52, No. 10 Montezuma 48

Montezuma rallied from a 13-point third-quarter deficit and nearly pulled off its second straight win over an unbeaten foe.

The Bravettes (20-4) took a 48-47 lead on Riley Gatton's layup with 1:33 to go, then Emma Atwood hit two free throws for Central Decatur (25-0) with 44 seconds remaining. Down three, Elise Boulton's 3-pointer in the final seconds was blocked.

Alli Masters led all scorers with 25 points and added seven rebounds for CD. Atwood had 14 points and eight boards. Gatton led Monte with 19 points. Iowa commit Shateah Wetering had nine points and eight rebounds.

No. 4 Newell-Fonda 61, No. 9 Lansing Kee 45

Olivia Larsen poured in 28 points on 12-for-19 shooting and Newell-Fonda outscored Kee 30-17 in the second half to stay undefeated.

The Hawks (22-2) turned it over 23 times and were 2 of 10 from 3-point range, while the Mustangs (25-0) had just eight turnovers and made 6 of 21 3s.

Nicki Wood scored 13 points to lead Kee, while Kendra Cooper had 12, plus 11 rebounds. Chloe Severson ripped down 18 boards.

No. 7 Exira-EHK 57, Ackley AGWSR 47

Sophia Peppers totaled 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals and the Spartans outscored AGWSR 31-20 in the second half.

Kealey Nelson added 18 points for Exira-EHK (24-1), which was 21 of 26 from the free-throw line. Peppers made 14 of 16 at the line.

The Cougars (21-3) were led by Mandy Willems with 14 points and eight rebounds.

No. 1 Springville 54, No. 15 Algona Garrigan 36

Garrigan missed its first 10 shots and two-time defending champion Springville cruised to the semifinals.

The Golden Bears shot 26.9 percent while the Orioles were 20 of 41 from the field. Springville led 29-10 at halftime.

Mikayla Nachazel scored 19 points, ripped down nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Madi Wageman added 10 points and six assists and Alyssa Jaeger also scored 10. Jenna Boelter led Garrigan with 10 points.

CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS

No. 10 North Union 47, No. 3 Panorama 46

Chloe Lofstrom hit a tie-breaking free throw with 17.2 seconds remaining and North Union advanced to the 2A semifinals with another upset. Bailey Beckman had two chances to win for Panorama, but her floater bounced off the rim with 5.6 seconds left, then after a steal, her deep 3 caromed away at the buzzer.

North Union (21-2) knocked off defending champion Western Christian on a buzzer beater in the regional finals and held Panorama (23-2) to 32.1 percent shooting here.

Lofstrom scored a game-high 14 points to go with nine rebounds. Samantha Hagedorn added 13 for NU. Beckman led the Panthers with 13 points.

No. 6 Cascade 61, No. 9 Dike-New Hartford 44

Dike-New Hartford missed 21 of 22 field goals as Cascade built a 48-31 lead after three and moved on the semifinals.

Both teams got off to a fast start, with DNH leading 19-15 after one, but the Wolverines (23-3) went cold and the experienced Cougars (23-3) took advantage. 

Point guard Nichole McDermott scored 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting and added eight rebounds and two assists for Cascade. Rachel Trumm had 10 points and 10 boards and Abbie Ruggeberg scored 11. Baylee Petersen led Dike-New Hartford, which upset No. 1 North Linn in the regional finals, with 13.
