CEDAR RAPIDS — Three of the four No. 1 teams in last week’s Gazette boys’ basketball poll lost, which means we’ve got some changes.

Des Moines Hoover is the new top-ranked team in Class 4A, and Cascade is No. 1 in 2A in this week’s rankings. They replace Iowa City West and Western Christian, respectively.

Cedar Rapids Xavier (12-5) also dropped a close game, though it was to 4A fifth-ranked Cedar Falls, so the Saints stay atop Class 3A. Mount Pleasant (15-3) moves up to No. 2, followed by Glenwood, Oskaloosa and Norwalk.

Norwalk beat Osky last week to avenge a lop-sided loss earlier this season.

West (13-3) saw its state-record 81-game home win streak snapped this past Saturday by Dubuque Senior and falls from the top spot to third. Senior (13-4) vaults from 10th to second and still has not lost with leading scorer Noah Carter in the lineup.

Carter played in his team’s first two games but sat out the next 12 after having emergency surgery to alleviate compartment syndrome in his left thigh. The 6-foot-5 junior forward has averaged 16 points in three games back.

Hoover has 4A’s best record of 15-1. Des Moines North (16-2) checks in at No. 4, with Cedar Falls fifth.

Western Christian (18-1) suffered its first loss of the season over the weekend, 62-59, to Madison, S.D., which is ranked second in its state’s Class A. South Dakota has just three classes.

That moves Cascade (20-0) to the top, with Van Meter (19-0) and Treynor (19-0) right behind at second and third. Class 2A still has five undefeated teams in Cascade, Van Meter, Treynor, East Marshall and South Hamilton.

Grand View Christian (18-0) is a very solid No. 1 in 1A, with North Linn (21-0) and Remsen St. Mary’s (19-0) at second and third, respectively, as it has been for weeks. Don Bosco (17-2) moved from sixth to fourth after an impressive 62-39 win last week over Dunkerton, which fell from fourth to ninth in this week’s rankings.
