Center Point-Urbana makes itself right at home in Class 4A girls' basketball

Allie Wooldridge stars as Stormin' Pointers oust Xavier, 53-41

CENTER POINT — The law was laid down on the bus ride home from last year’s state tournament.

A change in classification would be no excuse for failure.

“A lot of people were saying that because we were going to (Class) 4A, we were done,” Allie Wooldridge said. “We didn’t want to hear about it any more.”

Consider Tuesday’s regional final the silencer, once and for all.

Wooldridge posted 26 points and 11 rebounds, and fifth-ranked Center Point-Urbana stymied No. 8 Cedar Rapids Xavier at most every turn and ousted the Saints, 53-41, at Center Point-Urbana High School.

“There were some people that didn’t think we could compete in 4A,” CPU Coach Philip Klett said. “As long as we thought we belonged, we’re OK.”

A 3A state qualifier each of the last two years, CPU (21-3) heads back to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines next week in its new class. The Stormin’ Pointers’ quarterfinal opponent (most likely against No. 6 Boone or No. 9 LeMars) and time (Monday or Tuesday) will be determined Wednesday night.

CPU took control with a 12-0 run after spotting the Saints (14-9) the game’s first basket, and maintained it throughout.

Xavier missed 15 of 17 shots in the first quarter.

“We wanted to pressure them as much as possible,” said Callyn Fox, who, along with Wooldridge and Adrianna Katcher, gives the Stormin’ Pointers a wealth of length. “We didn’t want to give them open shots. We knew we couldn’t afford a bad game.”

Xavier entered the game with six consecutive wins, but never seriously threatened after falling behind in this one.

“Their length hurt us significantly down on the block. They blocked a lot of shots early, and that stunned us a little bit,” Saints Coach Tom Lilly said. “It gave us some hesitation, and she who hesitates is lost.”

The Stormin’ Pointers led 25-14 at halftime, then took their largest advantage at 34-16 on Karly Millikin’s 3-pointer with 3:45 left in the third quarter.

Xavier got within 44-35 on Emily Jasper’s free throw with 4:53 remaining and had a chance to creep closer, but Fox made a steal and converted a layup, and that was pretty much the final, lethal blow.

Fox added 11 points for the winners, and Katcher added eight.

Caitlynn Daniels paced Xavier with 11 points. Libby Arnold added 10. Both are sophomores.
