Iowa boys' state basketball 2018: Previewing Tuesday's games

Cedar Rapids Xavier/Marion in all-Metro 3A quarterfinal

DES MOINES — Capsules for Tuesday’s games involving area teams at the boys’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

Class 2A quarterfinals

No. 2 Cascade (23-1) vs. No. 3 Van Meter (23-1)

Time: 9:30 a.m.

Top players: All five Cascade starters average between 8.2 and 11.9 points per game. Senior guard Brock Simon is the one averaging 11.9, with junior forward Haris Hoffman next at 11.8. Then it’s senior forward Johnny Supple (10.0), senior forward Gannon O’Brien (9.1) and senior guard Derek Koppes (8.2). The Cougars will look to control tempo ... Van Meter’s top scorer is 6-foot-9 junior center Ryan Schmitt (14.5 ppg). Senior guard Blake Fryar is next at 11.8, followed by senior forward Jack Trudo (10.0) ... Both of these teams qualified for state tourney last season.

Class 3A quarterfinals

No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier (18-6) vs. Marion (14-10)

Time: 11:15 a.m.

Top players: Xavier seeks a championship three-peat in 3A. Senior guard Matt Mims (21.0 ppg) and senior wing Jackson Joens (16.4 ppg) are three-year starters. No other Saints player averages more than 7.5 points per game. Mims is headed to Division I South Dakota State, Joens to D-II Upper Iowa ... Marion got hot in the postseason, winning three games to get to state. Senior guard Chase Zielke is the Indians’ leading scorer (15.7 ppg), though he has been coming off the bench. Junior forward Trevor Paulsen averages 10.5 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game ... All six of Xavier’s losses were to Class 4A opponents.

Class 4A quarterfinals

No. 2 Iowa City West (19-4) vs. Muscatine (16-8)

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Top players: For West, it’s junior forward Patrick McCaffery. The University of Iowa commit averages 20.6 points per game and shoots 52 percent from the field. He gets help inside from senior center Seybian Sims (14.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg). Junior guard Dante Eldridge (11.3 ppg) is the Trojans’ primary 3-point shooting threat ... Senior forward Joe Wieskamp is Muscatine’s Mr. Everything. He leads the 4A field in scoring (33.7 ppg) and rebounding (13.5 rpg). He is 4A’s all-time career leading scorer and is headed to the University of Iowa.

Class 3A quarterfinal: No. 2 Mount Pleasant (21-3) vs. Waverly-Shell Rock (18-6), 2:45 p.m.

Class 3A quarterfinal: No. 5 Oskaloosa (21-3) vs. No. 10 Sergeant Bluff-Luton (15-9), 4:30 p.m.

Class 4A quarterfinal: No. 5 Johnston (20-3) vs. No. 9 Waukee (19-4), 8:15 p.m.
