Ann Jameson is reunited with basketball at Alburnett

Former area star lands first varsity coaching job

Relatively speaking, Ann Jameson is a tad late getting into the coaching fray.

She took her first varsity girls’ basketball head-coaching gig this season, at 38.

“I had coached middle-school (girls) for five years (in Springfield, Mo.),” she said. “I took a couple years off after I had my first child. After my second, I was itching to get back into it.”

She also desired to return home, closer to her family. And when the job opened at Alburnett, she jumped at it.

If you know girls’ basketball in Eastern Iowa, you probably know Jameson best as Ann Cavey. She played in two state tournaments (1996 and 1998) at North Cedar, and she still ranks No. 6 all-time statewide in career rebounds, with 1,196.

She went on to play at Southwest Missouri State from 1998 through 2002, playing in the 2001 Final Four alongside Jackie Stiles.

But home beckoned, and here she is. Her first Alburnett team posted a 13-8 regular-season mark and opens Class 2A regional play against Highland (12-9). Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Riverside.

“The beginning of the season was rough,” Jameson said. “We had a tough schedule to start our season.”

Jameson’s debut came against North Linn, the top-ranked team in 2A. The Pirates fell, 73-21.

“Holy cow. I thought, ‘Did I make the right choice here?’” said Jameson, a middle- and high-school science teacher. “But we’re doing the right things. We’re building a culture.

“We don’t have superstars, but we’re playing tougher defense and with more intensity.”

Saturday consists of a partial regional schedule in 2A and a complete slate in 3A. One of the top area 3A games will be played at Anamosa, where the Wamac Conference East Division champion Raiders (17-4) host Dyersville Beckman (12-9).

Anamosa won the two regular-season meetings with Beckman by scores of 31-26 and 39-32.

“Defense carried us both times,” Anamosa Coach Jack Leighty said. “I can guarantee this will be another defensive slugfest and that it’s going to be another 32-minute affair.”

No. 9 Monticello is the lone area ranked team in 3A. The Panthers (16-5) host Solon (6-14).
