Luis Arraez with late heroics as C.R. Kernels beat Fort Wayne in 10 innings for 7th straight win
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Luis Arraez tripled leading off the top of the 10th inning and scored on an errant throw on the play to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 3-2 Midwest League victory over Fort Wayne on Monday night at Parkview Field.
It’s the seventh consecutive win for Cedar Rapids (51-43, 15-10 second half), which has Tuesday off before returning home for a six-game homestand against Dayton and Bowling Green.
Arraez tripled down the first-base line in the 10th and was awarded home plate when a relay throw to try and get him at third base went out of play. Arraez went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored in the game.
Williams Ramirez allowed the first two batters to reach in the bottom of the 10th but got a strikeout on a fouled bunt attempt and a game-ending double play to notch his fourth save. Andrew Vasquez (1-0) struck out six in three shutout relief innings to get the pitching win.
J.J. Fernandez, Casey Scoggins and Chris Ibarra had two hits apiece for the Kernels. Ibarra was activated from the disabled list Sunday, switching spots with shortstop Jermaine Palacios.
Catcher Brian Olson also was promoted to high-Class A Fort Myers before Monday night’s game. First baseman Zander Wiel was named MWL and Minnesota Twins’ minor-league player of the week, after hitting .458 in six games, with five doubles, four home runs and 12 RBIs.
