Letter: Monica Vernon will work hard for district

Monica Vernon worked hard raising her three daughters to become responsible, educated, learned young ladies. She spearheaded the charge to build the first homeless shelter for women in the metro area, the Madge Phillips Center. In addition, she established, and successfully ran, her own company, The Vernon Research Group.

Fast forward to her more recent achievements. She was elected to the city council and served as a member from 2008-15. Her salary, which never exceeded $18,000, and into which she had no input, was never equal to the amount of work she put into her job. She worked tirelessly for Cedar Rapids. Following the flood of 2008, she made numerous trips to Washington, D.C. and spent many hours to obtain federal funding for flood recovery. In 2010, her peers recognized her leadership skills and named her mayor pro temp of the city council.

Now she is seeking to become the representative from the 1st Congressional District. When she is elected she will use her experience, understanding, organizational skills and knowledge of government to problem-solve and bring her record of hard work to the job. This district needs her skills and she needs your vote. Please join me at the polls on Nov. 8.
