Monday’s snowstorm brought hazardous winter driving conditions to much of Iowa, and was a contributing cause of a number of multicar crashes.
None bigger than the 50+ car crash on I-35 near Ames, IA, that resulted in a fatality.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig sat down with The Gazette to discuss the traffic camera video of that crash.
Should you intentionally pull into the ditch or stay on the road?
Should you stay in your car or get out?
Ludwig provided commentary on what drivers were doing well, and ways drivers can be safer in similar situations.
His number one piece of advice? Use caution. Slow down and maintain a safe following distance.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone get in an accident from going too slow,” he said. “It only takes one person to create a melee on the Interstate.”
His insights are timely with a second round of storms expected to move into the Eastern Iowa area this evening.
