One killed in Highway 30 accident south of Atkins

One person was killed Friday in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 30 and 32nd Avenue south of Atkins in Benton County.
According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, at approximately 4:45 p.m. Friday a motorist in a sports-utility vehicle attempted to cross Highway 30 westbound traveling north on 32nd Avenue. The motorist's vehicle was then struck by a semi-trailer truck being driven westbound by William Butterfield, 69, of Tama. According to the report, the SUV came to a rest in the median while the semi came to a rest in the west bound ditch.
The driver of the SUV was killed in the accident, and his or her identity has not been released by authorities. Butterfield was transported by Area Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He had been wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident according to the report.
According to the report, the accident remains under investigation and the Iowa State Patrol was assisted on scene by Linn County HAZMAT and Fire.
