Iowa City man accused of sex assaults on University of Iowa campus

Nov. 25, 2015 1:38 pm
IOWA CITY - University of Iowa police today arrested a 32-year-old Iowa City man in connection with a series of groping incidents near the UI Hospitals and Clinics earlier this month.
Adam Weinstein faces one count of third-degree sexual abuse, four counts of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, and three counts of third-degree harassment following a string of physical and verbal attacks Nov. 10.
At the time, police reported receiving three reports of a man groping women near the UI Hospitals, hospital ramp 4, and main library and they put out a description and a call for help from the public.
Authorities took Weinstein into custody today after he was released from the hospitals and clinics, where he had been involuntarily committed, according to UI officials.
The Nov. 10 incidents prompted a Hawk Alert, and they followed a campuswide email the previous week that warned of two new sexual assaults on campus. Those two, plus the three groping incidents reported Nov. 10, brought the total number of sexual assault reports to nine on the semester.
They came at a time when UI students were participating in a first-of-its-kind survey aimed at assessing campus climate related to sexual violence and misconduct.
Weinstein has been convicted of controlled substance violations in Johnson County in 2011 and 2012, according to court records.
Third-degree sexual abuse is a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Assault with intent to commit sexual abuse is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison. And third-degree harassment is a simple misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine.
