BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine police are investigating the suspicious deaths of two individuals after they were struck by a train Friday.

According to a Belle Plaine Police Department news release, police responded at about 5 a.m. Friday to the Union Pacific Railroad’s Ninth Street crossing for reports that two pedestrians had been struck by a train.

Police say a 35-year-old female and 8-year-old male were found dead at the scene. The names of the deceased will not be released until they are positively identified and their families are notified.

Kristen South, director of media relations with Union Pacific Railroad, said the railroad track reopened at about 11:30 a.m.

“Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the deceased,” South said in a Friday email. “Union Pacific’s locomotive engineer and conductor were immediately put in touch with peer counselors who are locomotive engineers and conductors as part of our Peer Support program.”
