CEDAR RAPIDS — NewBo City Market is slated as the site where Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett will announce whether he will seek the Republican nomination for governor on Tuesday.

The announcement event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Tuesday at NewBo, 1100 Third St. SE. Corbett plans to speak for 20 minutes beginning at 6:05 p.m.

The “family picnic” style event is free and open to the public, but registration is recommended to estimate quantities for food and drinks, he said. People can register at www.corbett.eventbrite.com.

All indications are that Corbett will announce a gubernatorial run.

“I will lay out a new game plan for Iowa and my four ideas for Iowa,” Corbett said on Monday. “I’m calling it my core four ... . This is what I would focus on if elected as Iowa’s governor.”

After the event, Corbett plans to leave on a three-day “barnstorming” tour of the state, “as many places as I can get in a three-day period.”

Corbett likely would face Gov. Kim Reynolds in a Republican primary in June. Reynolds has not officially declared but has hired a campaign staff.

As of January, Reynolds had $1.1 million in cash available for a 2018 gubernatorial campaign after raising nearly $638,000 last year. Corbett raised $26,967 and had $22,773 cash on hand in his mayoral war chest at the end of the most recent filing period, which was in January.
