CEDAR RAPIDS — A 9,000-square-foot Kwik Star convenience store will open at 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, providing new competition for existing convenience stores on 33rd Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids.
La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip, corporate parent of Kwik Star, will operate three stores in southwest Cedar Rapids. The chain will be competing with Ankeny-based Casey’s General Store, with two locations on 33rd Avenue SW, and Kwik Shop, a chain owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger with a location at 3301 J St. SW.
The Kwik Star at 251 33rd Ave. SW will sell regular gasoline, E-85 and diesel fuel.
Kwik Trip previously opened Kwik Star convenience stores at 3730 Williams Blvd. SW and 8835 Runway Ct. SW. Hans Zeitlow, director of real estate operations for Kwik Trip, has previously said that more Kwik Star locations are expected in Cedar Rapids.
Kwik Trip, a family-owned company, operates more than 500 Kwik Star and Kwik Trip locations in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The company re-branded its Iowa locations as Kwik Star stores to cut down on confusion with QuikTrip, the Tulsa, Okla., convenience store chain that operates locations in central Iowa.
The Cedar Rapids City Council approved rezoning of 2.5 acres of land for the new Kwik Star in January. The property was previously owned by Hupp Electric Motors, which moved its operations in 2014 to 500 57th St. in Marion after outgrowing its facilities in Cedar Rapids.
