CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man has been charged with vehicular homicide in a May crash that killed a Coggon woman and left a 2-year-old seriously injured.
According to court documents, Brandon Lynn Schaul, 25, also faces a charge of serious injury by vehicle and driving while barred.
Schaul made his initial appearance Thursday and is awaiting trial, according to the Linn County Jail. He is being held on a $100,000 cash only bond.
On May 18, officials said Schaul was driving a pick-up shortly before 1 a.m. when he hit a red Dodge Caravan near the intersection of Highway 13 and Valley Farm Road near Central City. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Rachel Hope Denny, 26, who was driving the van, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 2-year-old daughter, Izabella, was hospitalized in critical condition.
According to a
website and
Facebook page set up for Denny and Izabella, the toddler is still hospitalized at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A benefit concert is scheduled for Aug. 3 at the Chrome Horse Saloon in Cedar Rapids to raise money for the Rachel and Bella fund, which helps support Denny's son and Izabella's ongoing care.
