Iowa center Steve Kraficisin (#54, right) grapples to regain control of the ball after it was knocked away from him by Wichita State's Antoine Carr (left), during the first half of their NCAA Midwest Tournament second round game Sunday. Iowa received a first-round bye in the tournament before facing the Shockers. Wichita State rallied in the second half from a 15-point deficit in the game. Iowa called its last timeout with 17 seconds left in the contest with the ball and the score tied at 56-56. Forward Kevin Boyle then missed a seven-foot shot and Vince Brookins of Iowa fouled Shocker Antoine Carr on the rebound. Iowa coach Lute Olson called a timeout (with none left) that drew a technical foul on the Hawkeyes. Carr missed the front end of the one-and-one, but Randy Smithson hit both technical foul shots to put Wichita State up 58-56. The Shockers received the ball out of bounds, were fouled, and Carr hit both foul shots to win the game, 60-56. Wichita State advanced to the Elite Eight in the tournament, losing to Louisiana State (LSU), 96-85. Photo March 15, 1981.
