As caucus day approaches, candidates flock to the state with press pools close behind. Truly unique images are harder to make this late in the cycle, when we’ve photographed the same candidates repeatedly. So, when I had the chance to stop by a Holiday Bowl watch party with Joe Biden in attendance, I headed as quickly as I could from the rally in Williamsburg to the party in Coralville. Seeking another angle, I moved around the room as Biden sat briefly on the floor, and I framed the image to include the traveling press pool crammed into the doorway. What might look like an intimate event from one angle is, more truthfully, a strange moment captured by dozens of journalists. This was a historic Election Day. Between the Covid-19 coronavirus and the contentious election, I was expecting long lines and much more activity at the polls. I didn’t see any of that. Instead, I fell back to looking for quiet moments and looking for patterns and unique framing.
