WILLIAMSBURG — Cain Brown kept his head back, his hips high.
And his mind focused.
“On a day like this, you just have to keep your mind clear,” the Mid-Prairie junior said. “You can’t have any excuses.”

And this was a day in which excuses could have been tolerated.
Brown dodged the raindrops and cleared 6 feet, 5 inches to top state leader Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg in the boys’ high jump at Tuesday’s Williamsburg Co-Ed Invitational track and field meet at Bob Murphy Stadium.
“(Weisskopf) is No. 1 (in the state) right now, so it feels pretty good to beat him tonight,” Brown said.
Brown and Weisskopf are going to bump into each other frequently this season, with much higher stakes than that of an April invitational. It’s likely that they will meet in a state-qualifying meet, then again in the state championships.
Weisskopf is a sophomore who has cleared 6-9. Brown’s season best is 6-7. They rank 1-2 in Class 2A.
After Brown cleared 6-5 and Weisskopf missed for the third time, Brown accepted the victory and declined to continue and risk peril in the rain.
“My first jump at 5-10, I slipped with my plant leg,” Brown said. “But (considering the conditions), this is the best my form has been. I had been staring at the bar when I jumped, but today I kept my head back and my hips high.”
The boys’ team race came down to the final event, with Cedar Rapids Prairie capturing the crown with 96 points. Clear Creek Amana and Solon tied for second with 92.
Prairie’s Bryson Canton captured the 1,600-meter title in 4:36.78, and the Hawks won the 3,200-meter relay.
Solon and CCA won three events apiece. Benton’s Sam Wallace claimed the 100 and 200. Lance Sobaski of Washington (Iowa) was the 800 winner in a school-record 1:58.26.
Solon rolled to the girls’ team title with 154 points. Prairie was second with 109, followed by Williamsburg (75).
The girls’ performance of the night came in the 3,200-meter relay, in which Prairie’s all-senior lineup of Gabby Cortez, Alysa Koppes, Alexis Moses and Lily Johannes won in 9:20.32, vaulting to the top spot in the state this season by more than 12 seconds.
Prairie won five events, Solon claimed four and dominated thanks to its depth.
A Class 1A program, Belle Plaine moved to No. 1 (all classes) in the boys’ shuttle hurdle relay. Ethan Hamilton, Connor Timm, Eli Ehlen and Ben DeMeulenaere blazed in 1:01.69.
