DES MOINES — The Class 2A girls’ distance medley relay was a divine race for Mid-Prairie on Friday at the state track and field meet.
Maddie Edington and Amber Swart got the Golden Hawks out to a comfortable lead, running the two 200-meter legs in a combined time of 52.25.
Mitzi Evans, who finished third in the 400-meter dash on Thursday, ran her 400-meter leg in 59.317. Then she handed the baton to Danielle Hostetler, a freshman who won her first state title in the 3,200-meter run on Thursday.

Hostetler had a comfortable lead over Panorama’s Jaidyn Sellers. But Sellers closed the gap during the first lap of the 800-meter leg and on the last lap, the two were neck-and-neck.
When it was time to open it up on the final 100 meters, Sellers briefly took the lead over Hostetler. But Hostetler wasn’t about to let her keep the lead.
“I was on the back stretch and yelled, ‘God, help me!’” Hostetler said. “And then as I passed that girl, I screamed. That got me across the line.”
Her teammates met her at the finish line at Drake Stadium with an embrace.
“That was a fantastic finish by her at the end,” Edgington said. “You could really see her dig deep at the end.”
This was Mid-Prairie’s third-straight distance medley victory.
“I was so thankful that Mitzie, Maddie and Amber put me in a good spot, otherwise, I would not have been able to do that,” Hostetler said.
Mid-Prairie leads the 2A girls’ team race with 31 points. Williamsburg is tied with Northeast for second place with 17 points.
Williamsburg hasn’t had any winners to this point, but its 800-meter relay team of Haylee Frederick, Kendra Eichhorn, Inga Dovre and Gracie Ehret finished second with a time of 1:44.91 on Friday. Lauren Pope also finished second on the shot put on Thursday and Williamsburg’s 3,200-meter relay team of Macey Morovets, Natalie Bemer, Ruth Jennings and Taylor Winegarden finished eighth with a time of 10:07.72.
Waukon is tied for sixth place with 14 points. Annika Headington is responsible for 13 of the 14. After winning the shot put on Thursday, Headington followed it up with a sixth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 123 feet, 5 inches. Kaitlyn Krambeer finished eighth in the long jump with a jump of 16-8 1/4.
