DES MOINES — Danielle Hostetler continued the Mid-Prairie and family dominance in the 1,500-meter run at the Class 2A girls’ state track and field meet Saturday.
Hostetler, a freshman, won the 1,500 with a personal best time of 4:45.09. Van Meter’s Clare Kelly got second with a time of 4:53.45.
It was the fifth straight 2A 1,500 won by a Hostetler.

“It means a lot to continue the legacy,” Hostetler said. “Both of my older sisters (Anna and Marie) are here today and they were cheering me on. Also, my younger sister was here and I want to be an inspiration to her.”
Hostetler wasn’t sure how she’d perform in the 1,500 on Saturday in Drake Stadium. Just two hours before her 1,500, she ran in the 800-meter run.
She finished eighth and looked wiped out.
“I was just thankful I could finish out the weekend with a win,” Hostetler said. “I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it after the tough 800-meter.”
It wasn’t just a win, it was a convincing win for Hostetler, who picked up the third state title of her young career.
Hostetler scored 21 points for Mid-Prairie, which won the 2A team title with 61. It’s the Golden Hawks’ third straight state championship.
Mitzi Evans, a strong middle-distance runner, scored 19 points. She finished second in the same 800 Hostetler struggled in, third in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.
Hostetler and Evans also were part of the winning distance medley relay team.
Williamsburg finished seventh in the team race with 31 points.
Williamsburg’s 400-meter relay team of Haylee Frederick, Kendra Eichhorn, Amina DeWitt and Gracie Ehret finished second on Saturday in a time of 49.87. It finished second to Northeast’s relay team, which set a state-meet record with a time of 49.29.
Mid-Prairie’s team of Maddie Edgington, Amara Jones, Alyssa McDowell and Amber Swart finished third in 50.59.
In the shuttle hurdle relay, Cascade’s team of Elizabeth Gibbs, Rachel Rhomberg, Libby Felton and Devin Simon finished second in 1:07.05. Osage won in 1:06.25.
Class 1A
Kelly Proesch continued her special weekend. She claimed North Cedar’s first girls’ title on Friday in the 400-meter hurdles and she got her second gold Saturday in the 100-meter hurdles.
“That race, especially, is my favorite race,” Proesch said of the 100 hurdles. “I’ve been working toward that since I was 15 years old. Winning that race was a really special moment for me.”

Proesch edged Conrad BCLUW’s Lizzie Garber and Belle Plaine’s Olivia Bohlen.
But it was Bohlen and her Belle Plaine teammates — Jacy Gates, Jacey Rieneke and Alyssa Tegeler — who won the shuttle hurdle relay.
“It feels amazing to share this title with my teammates,” Bohlen said. “We’ve been pushing each other in practice and we were just making sure we were thinking, ‘we’re not the best yet.’ We wanted to prove it.”
North Cedar tied for fifth in the team race with 30 points — all scored by Proesch, who also finished fourth in the 100- and the 200-meter dashes. Madrid won with 51.
“That was not easy,” Proesch said. “Running three sprints in 50 minutes was a lot and I was tired. The 200 definitely wasn’t my best race and I wish I could see what I could do in the 200 fresh but I’m obviously happy about my hurdle races.
“Overall a good weekend for me — I’m a two-time state champ. I can’t ask for much more than that.”
