Milky Way Masters win 15th straight state swim title

DES MOINES — Sarah Miller and Tom Belin won six individual events each, leading the Milky Way Masters Swim Club of Cedar Rapids to its 15th consecutive and 24th overall Iowa State Masters swimming championship.

Joe Taylor, Simon Pheasant and Chris Tyler each won four individual events.

Milky Way Masters totaled 1,487 points to outdistance second-place Des Moines Masters (614 points) and Ames Masters Aquatic Club (462 points) in the 12-team competition. Barb Gay won three events.

Former Cedar Rapids Washington standout and Iowa swimmer Ryan Phelan won two events for Milky Way, as did Sami Sheetz, Sara Frost, Cara Briggs-Farmer, Julie Cain, Traci Miller, Tim Jacobs, Julie Kann, John Bradley, Joe Barger and Todd Dalecky.

Other Milk Way winners were Barry Breffle, Ray Sheetz, Frank Fowler and Nick Gearhart.

Milky Way also won the 400 free and 200 medley relays in two women’s and three men’s age groups, the 200 free relay in one women’s and three men’s groups, and captured six mixed titles in the 200 free and 200 medley relays.

The Iowa City Flyers finished fifth in the team standings, the Cedar Rapids YMCA Narwhals sixth and the Decorah Masters ninth.
