CEDAR RAPIDS – Beginning in late October, downtown Cedar Rapids will play host to a full-on “Rampage.”

Chris Kokalis – co-owner and general manager of the new Cedar Rapids professional arena soccer franchise – announced in a Thursday press conference that the official name of the Major Arena Soccer League team will be Cedar Rapids Rampage.

“Rampage really fit with what we were wanting to go with,” Kokalis said. “I think that the public and the community will be proud of it. When you think of rampage, you think of intensity, you think of drive. That’s what we hope our soccer club puts out there.”

The name was the result of a “Name the Team” contest announced during its introductory news conference on June 11. Out of over 2,500 different suggestions, Shawn Sukalski of Cedar Rapids was the first to suggest “Rampage,” and will be rewarded with four season tickets.

The first sports franchise Kokalis worked for was managing ticket sales in 2000 for the Milwaukee Rampage professional outdoor soccer club, so when Sukalski’s suggestion was submitted, it was the one name that sparked unanimous agreement amongst the ownership group and staff.

“I’ve got some soccer in my blood,” Kokalis said. “I was very fortunate to work for three great soccer organizations. … It’s great to be back in the game.”

Primary and alternate logos were unveiled, as well as the website www.cedarrapidsrampage.com. The club expects to announce a coaching hire within the next couple of weeks.

“Someone who’s going to give it their all,” Kokalis said. “Who’s going to represent not only our organization well, but this town well.”

Once a coach is hired, tryouts and player signings will occur in August.

Training camp will begin in October, and the first home game at the U.S. Cellular Center is set for Oct. 30.

The regular season runs from November through February, with the playoffs in March.
