Linn-Mar girls' golf finishes second in MVC Valley

Lions place behind Dubuque Wahlert for second straight season; Xavier's Braksiek is MVC Mississippi runner-up

IOWA CITY — Linn-Mar matched its divisional finish from last season.

The Lions earned their second straight runner-up finish in the third and final round of the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Divisional on Monday at Finkbine Golf Course. Dubuque Wahlert shot a final-round best 353 and claimed the MVC Valley division team title with a total of 1,028.

Linn-Mar posted 382 Monday for a three-round score of 1,128. The Lions were paced by senior Tori Niemeyer and sophomore Tatum Depuydt again. Both shot 87, tying Iowa City Liberty’s Neely Maurus for fourth.

“I thought considering we lost four girls from last year’s team who earned some sort of conference or metro honors, it says a lot about the time these girls have put in during the offseason and current season, as well as where our program is,” Linn-Mar Coach Chris James told The Gazette. “Wahlert has a phenomenal team who would compete with anybody in the state, in really any year.”

Wahlert’s Anna Jensen was medalist with 83, while the Golden Eagles’ Mary Edwards and Dubuque Hempstead’s Morgan Hawkins shot 84 apiece.

Totals from the MVC Super meet and two divisionals determine the team champion and all-conference performers. The top eight comprise the first team, while the next flight of eight receive second-team honors.

Jensen earned MVC Valley Athlete of the Year honors, recording a 237 total and topping teammates Edwards and Anna Nacos by 17.

Depuydt and Niemeyer placed fourth and fifth, respectively, earning first-team honors for the second straight season. Depuydt tallied 256 overall. Niemeyer came in with 261. They were two of three Lions in the top 10, joining second-teamer Sydney Stephenson. Abby Hoefle received honorable mention.

“I know Tatum and Tori are pleased to have earned first team but they are definitely not satisfied,” James said. “They know there’s still things we have left to accomplish this year. Having Sydney and Abby earn conference honors will only motivate them to keep getting better because now they have a taste of it.

“I’m excited for what they will do in the future but I think all of our girls are excited for what we have in front of us right now.”

Maurus, the CRANDIC medalist, was seventh overall at 274 to become Liberty’s first girls’ golfer to earn first-team honors.

Iowa City West duo Rylee Goodfellow and Ellie Kouba made the second team.
