AMES — Matt Campbell’s Iowa State football team had three players selected to the preseason all-Big 12 team on Wednesday.
Running back David Montgomery, cornerback Brian Peavy and defensive end JaQuan Bailey were the three selected.
Montgomery became Iowa State’s 14th 1,000-yard rusher last season when he ran for 1,198 yards. The junior also led the nation with 104 forced missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus. He also had 828 yards after contact.
Montgomery proved to be more than a runner last season, hauling in 36 passes for 296 yards, good for fifth on last season’s team. Montgomery is Iowa State’s second leading receiver heading into 2018.
Peavy flirted with going to the NFL after his junior campaign, but ultimately decided to stay in Ames. The cornerback has earned all-Big 12 recognition in each of his first three seasons. He is the active team leader in tackles with 232, pass breakups with 30 and interceptions with five.
Peavy led the team in takeaways last season with four.
Bailey, a junior, led the team in sacks last year with seven, and he has 10.5 in his career. Iowa State’s all-time sack record is 18. Bailey also had 34 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles last season.
