VAN HORNE — Back to back in the Wamac.

With seven wrestlers in the finals, Class 2A No. 2 West Delaware scored 274.5 points and won the team title at the Wamac Conference wrestling tournament for the second year in a row Saturday at Benton Community High School.

“This team has supported each other all year long in dual meets and in tournaments,” West Delaware Coach Jeff Voss said. “I was real happy with how we finished the day. I knew the finals we had some tough matchups, but to get that many guys in the finals of the Wamac tournament, we had to beat some good guys to get there.”

West Delaware junior Jack Neuhaus collected the only title for the Hawks at 182 pounds with a 5-2 decision over Seamus Poynton of Solon. Two years removed from having a losing record, Neuhaus is a returning state qualifier (seventh place at 170) and is ranked sixth by The Predicament with a 32-3 record.

“I get to put my name up on the board under Wamac champs,” Neuhaus said.

The Wamac Most Valuable Player award was given to Center Point-Urbana senior Caleb Fuessley, who became the eighth wrestler in the 61-year history of the event to win four Wamac titles. Fuessley won titles at 113 as a freshman and sophomore, then won at 120 last season. Ranked third at 120 this year, Fuessley defended his crown with two technical falls and a 14-7 decision over sixth-ranked Ryan Clark of Mount Vernon.

“It means a lot,” Fuessley said. “Put in a lot of hard work, a lot of hard hours. Just to have it come to fruition was pretty cool.”

Sixth-ranked Solon finished second as a team with 220 points and had three winners. Third-ranked freshman Hayden Taylor (42-2) scored a whopping 26 points in a 12-point major decision over Wyatt Bieschke of Benton Community. At 152, sixth-ranked Solon senior Zack Bevans (39-5) scored a 5-2 decision over No. 7 Scott Betterton of Vinton-Shellsburg, while fellow senior teammate Mike Hoyle upped his record to 38-1 with a 40-second pin of Williamsburg’s Billy Grout.

Junior Jalen Schropp (132) and senior Garrett Jensen (145) each won titles for third-place Williamsburg (170 points), while Independence finished fourth (155.5) behind champions Isaiah Weber (113), Cole Davis (160) and heavyweight Drew Evans.
