MARION — When you face the West Delaware Hawks, you know you’re facing a pace you see on an infrequent basis.
It’s been that way since Brett Mather took over this program, nearly a quarter-century ago. It will be that way until he leaves, and maybe longer.
“We want to keep that as a tradition,” setter Macey Kleitsch said. “If we can go fast, keep the other team out of system and force them to block us one-on-one, it makes it easier for us.”
It was easy Tuesday night. The Class 4A 10th-rated Hawks swept Marion, 25-19, 25-15, 25-14, in a Wamac Conference East Division volleyball match at Marion High School.
“When you play West Delaware, you try to talk to the girls,” Marion Coach Roxanne Paulsen said. “They’ve got to be one-on-one. They’ve got to stay with all their hitters. And still, it can wear you down both physically and mentally.”
After pulling away from a 16-all deadlock in the first set, there really weren’t any high-stress moments for the Hawks (19-6 overall, 3-0 division).
Mather, whose 800th career win is on the not-so-distant horizon, called just one timeout — with the Hawks leading 19-14 in the third set.

“We were overplaying a little bit,” he said. “We were running in on everything.”
After the breather, the Hawks scored the final six points in succession.
West Delaware’s tempo, when clicking, creates a lot of options. And options were everywhere Tuesday. Six different hitters had at least five kills, led by Claire Demmer (11) and JoAnna Voss (10).
“This was one of Voss’ best matches,” Mather said. “She took advantage of some holes in their defense.”
Kleitsch collected 35 assists, and Allison Collier served seven of the Hawks’ 11 aces. Marion (9-11, 1-2), meanwhile, managed just one ace.
“Our serving was more aggressive than it’s been, and our serve-receive sided out consistently,” Mather said.
Randi Wright led Marion with six kills.
