Championship Friday at the Iowa high school state volleyball tournament crowned five state volleyball champions at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

Here's a look at the final scores and our complete coverage.

Class 5A: No. 2 Ankeny Centennial 3, No. 1 Cedar Falls 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-23)

A lot changed in 2 1/2 months. Namely, Devyn Robinson was back.

Second-ranked Ankeny Centennial captured its fourth Class 5A state volleyball championship in five years.

“Everybody needed to bring their ‘A’ game, and everybody contributed,” Robinson said after the Jaguars (41-3) snapped the Tigers’ 75-match win streak. “We weren’t nervous, because we knew we had all the right things we needed to win.”

Class 4A: No. 4 Dubuque Wahlert 3, No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier 1 (25-20, 25-19, 14-25, 25-14)

You’d think it would be a reprieve, Aliyah Carter going to the back row. Instead, it was a nightmare.

Carter recorded 27 kills, a good share of them coming from behind the 10-foot line, and fourth-ranked Dubuque Wahlert toppled No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier in four sets.

“This was the most success I’ve had from the back row,” Carter said. “They weren’t putting up a block early in the match, so I just kept swinging away.”

Class 3A: No. 1 Carroll Kuemper 3, No. 2 Tipton 1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-22)

The Tipton Tigers have skill and guts. But they don’t have 6-foot-1 or 6-foot-3.

Carroll Kuemper does. And the Knights also have a championship trophy.

“We’re not used to seeing that kind of height,” Tipton’s Amanda Smith said. “We probably didn’t adjust as well as we could have, but we fought for every single point.

Western’s win over a fellow Christian school 16 miles down the road represented a third state championship in four years and 17th overall. It’s the 11th title for Veerbeek, tying former Dubuque Wahlert coach Tom Keating for most all-time.

“Kind of overwhelming,” Veerbeek said. “I’ve had great teams come through. We have a great culture built up at Western Christian volleyball, a great tradition. It’s not just one player.”

And that was the theme for this match and this team.

Class 1A: No. 1 Janesville 3, No. 3 Fort Madison Holy Trinity 0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-22)

Janesville remains the shiniest jewel in the world of Iowa small-school volleyball.

The Wildcats won their fourth consecutive title by sweeping their way through the state tournament, not losing as much as a set, for the third straight year. They haven’t lost to a 1A opponent since the 2014 state semifinals.

“It’s really cool to be a four-time champion,” Janesville's Bree Thompson said. “When we came in here, we set our goals super, super high.”
