West maintains control of Iowa City volleyball rivalry

Women of Troy top City High for the 4th straight year

IOWA CITY — The Spike stays put.

Setter Rylee Fay did a little of everything — and everything well — as Class 5A 10th-ranked Iowa City West handled No. 7 Iowa City High in four sets (25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) in a Mississippi Valley Conference cross-divisional volleyball match Tuesday night at City High.

It was the fourth straight win for West in this series.

“It’s just a great feeling,” said Fay, a junior. “Every one of us was nervous, and it came down to which team could get the nerves out first.”

That was West (1-0), which actually had fewer kills than the Little Hawks (0-1) by a 41-36 margin, but played a more error-free match.

“I think (City) was siding out better than us, but we were serving better,” West Coach Scott Sanders said.

The final statistics went along with his way of thinking. West served 14 aces, while City made 15 service errors.

“Lots of unforced errors,” City Coach Tricia Carty said. “Serving was a huge issue for us. We saw glimmers of greatness, but we need to consistently put things together better than we did tonight.”

Fay is more than just a setter. Sure, she collected 28 assists, but she also posted five aces, four kills and five blocks.

“I’m not really much of a blocker usually,” she said. “But today, I was just on.”

Sanders said, “A couple times I looked out at her like, ‘Is that the right kid?’”

After the teams split the first two sets, West made the pivotal run, a four-point surge late in Game 3 that got the Women of Troy to set point at 24-18. Then West scored the first four points of the fourth set, extended the lead to 14-5 and was home free.

Claire Overton led the winners with 11 kills. Cailyn Morgan added nine.

Ellie Evans and Kelsey Law posted 13 kills apiece for City High. Lindsey Bolton distributed 20 assists.
