This isn’t a money grab for Mike Jay. After all, admission is free.

“I couldn’t care less how many people come to watch,” said Jay, who couples as track and field announcer and track and field ambassador. “This is for the kids, giving them one last opportunity to compete with their peers.”

On the heels of a canceled high school season, Jay is sponsoring the Track Guy Track and Field Carnival on Tuesday at BGM High School in Brooklyn.

Field events begin at 3 p.m.; running events start at 6:30.

A field of 205 competitors will hail from six Midwest states, the majority from Iowa.

“I was hoping for 100,” said Jay, best known as public-address announcer of the Drake Relays. “It’s going to be interesting to see who has been working out, and who’s coming just to compete one more time.”

Jay has enlisted a crew from the Iowa Assocation of Track Officials, all of whom will be masked up. Starting blocks will be sanitized after every race.

“We can’t mandate that spectators wear masks, but we do highly recommend it,” he said. “We are going to rope off every other row in the bleachers, so we encourage people to bring their lawn chairs. They will have access to the infield, if they would like to watch from there.”

One of the top male sprinters will be Ezekiel Clark of St. Louis, who has run times of 10.47 in the 100 and 22.05 in the 200. Libby Wedewer of Dubuque Wahlert, a University of Northern Iowa recruit, headlines the girls’ field.

If you’re looking for Metro/Iowa City flavor, check out the boys’ 110-meter hurdles. Drew Bartels of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Oisin Leopold of Iowa City High, Carson Reilly of Linn-Mar and Kian Davis of Cedar Rapids Prairie are in the fastest heat.

Bartels also is among the top contenders in the boys’ long jump, along with Carter Bell of Cedar Rapids Washington, Jaxon Thompson of Linn-Mar, Prosper Kopongo of Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Brody Lovell of Kennedy.

The meet will end with a boys’ invitational 1,600-meter run that includes Kennedy’s Jacob Green and Prairie’s Jack Pendergast. Jay has enlisted a “rabbit” to lead the field through 800 meters in 2:04.
