South Winneshiek's Rodney Schwartzhoff sweeps 1A state track sprints

Warriors also win 400-meter relay

DES MOINES — South Winneshiek’s Rodney Schwartzhoff came from the middle of the pack, seemingly out of nowhere, in the last 100 meters of the Class 1A boys’ 200-meter dash, and propelled himself to the lead.

Schwartzhoff finished in first with a time of 22.14.

“I just had a little kick in me to pass them because I didn’t want to get second,” Schwartzhoff said.

The win completed the sprint sweep for Schwartzhoff, who won the 100-meter dash earlier Saturday at Drake Stadium in the state track and field state meet.

Schwartzhoff’s time in the 100-meter was 10.95.

“It’s a great feeling,” Schwartzhoff said of the sweep. “I was feeling really good at the start of the day when I started running and warming up.”

South Winn’s 400-meter relay team also took home a first-place finish, with Schwartzhoff running the third leg. The team of Noah Tieskoetter, Brennan Holthaus, Schwartzhoff and Levi Lukes finished with a time of 43.92, completing Schwartzhoff’s impressive day.

South Winn finished in fifth place with 34 points. Council Bluffs St. Albert finished in first with 64 points.

Lisbon tied for third with 36.

Lisbon didn’t have any winners on Saturday, but did have a few medalists. Payton Bahl ran the 800-meter race and the 1,600-meter relay, and took home third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

In the 800-meter race, Bahl had to contend with Central Lyon’s Gable Sieperda and North Union’s Riley Bauer. Bahl put himself in first place early in the race, but couldn’t make his lead last, finishing with a time of 1:58.19. Both Sieperda and Bauer broke the previous state record with times of 1:53.58 and 1:52.10, respectively.

“I was just trying to stick with them as much as I could,” Bahl said. “I had a pretty good time in the distance medley yesterday, but I just didn’t have the same stuff, it just wasn’t as good of a day as it was yesterday. I’m still happy with my time, I just missed the school record, and I wish I would’ve gotten that, but third place, I’ll take it.”
