Marion's Jeremy Fopma scrambles to the starting line, then sets a meet record

Boys track & field: His 3,200-meter effort of 9:29.66 ranks No. 2 in Iowa this season

CEDAR RAPIDS — For Jeremy Fopma, getting to the starting line was the trickiest part.

“I was coming up the hill, and I heard (public address announcer Mike Jay) calling my name, to report or be scratched,” said Fopma, the distance star for Marion High School.

Fopma dumped his sweats, slipped on his spikes and got to the clerk of course just in time.

Just in time to get to the starting line. Just in time to set a meet record.

Fopma ran a personal-best 9:29.66 to capture the 3,200-meter race at the Hawkins Invitational boys’ track and field meet Tuesday at John Wall Field.

That ranks No. 2 in the state this season and automatically qualified him for the Drake Relays.

“I had warmed up, but I hadn’t done any sprinting,” said Fopma, who committed to Central College earlier this spring. “The first two laps, I stayed relaxed so I wouldn’t pull anything.”

Linn-Mar was the team champion, winning seven events and compiling 160 points. Host Cedar Rapids Prairie was second with 135.5, followed by Iowa City West (81) and Marion (75.5).

Fopma had company for the first half of the race, cruising through the midpoint at 4:42, then pulled away in the final 1,600.

“I was really glad somebody was there with me to help push and control the pace,” he said.

Trent Davis spearheaded Linn-Mar’s title charge, running on the winning shuttle hurdle relay team (which finished in 1:00.14), then lowered his season best in the 110-meter highs in 14.82 seconds, which ranks No. 4 in Iowa this season.

“It felt pretty good out there today,” Davis said. “I have some pretty high expectations this year ... I hope to get under 14.2, which would be a school record.

“I’ve done a lot of hill training with a weight vest. Hopefully it pays off. I really want it bad.”

Other individual champions for Linn-Mar were Trey Hutcheson in the high jump (6-2), Riley Higgins in the discus (156-1 1/2) and Trent Long in the 800 (1:59.99). The Lions also claimed the sprint medley and 400-meter relays.

Despite finishing back in the team standings, West posted two dynamite performances. Gabe Caruthers became the first runner in the state to eclipse the 50-second mark in the 400, finishing in 49.85. And Austin West lowered his state-best 400 hurdles time to 53.03 seconds, a meet record.

Prairie’s Max Lowe was the 1,600-meter champion and ran on the Hawks’ winning 3,200-meter relay squad.
