Liberty's Ashlyn Keeney, West's Gabe Caruthers shine in state-qualifying track meet

Iowa City High girls, Iowa City West boys claim titles at City High

IOWA CITY — Ashlyn Keeney wasn’t here to blast out some killer times.

It was strictly win and advance. Times four.

“I’ve had a cold the last few days,” she said, sniffling. “I’m definitely tired right now.”

The freshman distance ace from Iowa City Liberty fought through it, sweeping the girls’ 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter races in a Class 4A state-qualifying track and field meet Friday night at Bates Field. She also anchored the Lightning from behind in the distance medley relay.

Her individual times: 2:15.39, 4:50.57 and 10:25.61.

Iowa City schools topped both team races, including a 1-2-3 sweep on the girls’ side. Iowa City High won three of the last four events to lead a tightly bunched foursome at the top; the Little Hawks tallied 129 points, followed by Liberty (123), Iowa City West (120) and Cedar Rapids Prairie (117).

Led by four-time winner Gabe Caruthers, West outscored Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 138-120, for the boys’ title. City High was third with 110.

The top two in each event automatically qualify for the state meet, May 16-18 at Drake Stadium, Des Moines.

City High’s girls accumulated eight automatic qualifiers. Liberty and West have seven, Prairie six. West won eight boys’ events, and has eight automatic qualifiers, as does City High. Kennedy has six.

At-large qualifiers are scheduled to be released Saturday afternoon.

Keeney ran her first four-event race last week at a Mississippi Valley Conference divisional meet. Her second was Friday.

“Because of my cold, I was trying to conserve my energy as much as I could,” she said. “I wanted to win, but I wasn’t too worried about my times.”

Caruthers was the star of the boys’ portion of the meet. Like Keeney, he won three individual events (100 in 11.05 seconds, 200 in 22.22, 400 in 49.10), and anchored home a victorious relay (sprint medley).

“I liked running the individual events,” he said. “We’re a team of good individuals.”

Friday’s meet, like all of the rest of the state qualifiers in the state, had originally been scheduled for Thursday, but was moved back because of weather.

“I’m so glad they moved it back,” Caruthers said. “(Thursday), it was terrible ... cold and windy. Tonight, it’s beautiful, almost no breeze.”

Caruthers anchored the sprint medley in 47.9 seconds.

“Put three reliable guys on it, and me, and I think we’ve got it stacked,” he said.

West’s Kolby Greiner won the 3,200 and 1,600.

Saint Louis University recruit Madie Andorf led the Prairie girls, running the third leg of the winning sprint medley relay and claiming the 100 in 12.67 seconds.

“Everybody’s performance was great for us today,” she said. “This is the third time I’ll make it to state in four events, and I’m really excited about next week. It feels good to qualify automatically; I don’t have to worry about getting in.”
