SOLON — Jorel Justus just seems to always be in the right place on a soccer field.

A year after earning a spot on the Class 1A all-state first team, the Solon senior is heating up as the fourth-ranked Spartans eye their final four regular-season contests.

“He has been struggling as of late to put the ball away,” Solon Coach Jeremy McMurrin said after the Spartans overwhelmed No. 12 Center Point-Urbana, 6-2, in a Wamac Conference boys’ soccer match Tuesday night at Spartan Stadium. “But we have put in a lot of work since our last game. It showed off for him tonight, too, as he put the ball away, which is great because we need him to. We need him to score goals.”

The match was originally slated to be played at Fross Park in Center Point, but the recent rainfall rendered that grass field unplayable.

Given the comforts of his home field, Justus recorded his second hat trick of the season and now leads Solon with 13 goals. The Spartans (12-3) have scored at least four goals in eight of their matches this season.

“Starting hard and playing high press to the end,” Justus said.

Two Justus goals seemingly had the contest in hand with Solon leading 3-0 midway through the second half, but two penalty-kick conversions within 47 seconds of each other by CPU senior Brandon Dreier suddenly made it a one-score match.

“Our coach came over and said we have to get the energy back,” Justus said.

Within a minute, Justus provided that energy with his third goal of the night in the 60th minute. Teammates Luke Yetley and William Wittich tacked on insurance tallies that gave Solon its eighth win this season by at least four goals.

The Spartans have won six in a row and nine of 10.

“We have been working teams into the ground,” Justus said.

Yetley — also a first team all-state honoree last season — finished with two goals and now has 11 this season.

Dreier now has 14 goals for CPU (5-3).
