MOUNT VERNON — Even the most prolific goal-scorer won’t do much with the ball continually on their side of the field.

The Mount Vernon girls’ soccer team knew visiting West Liberty had a senior in Sarah Seele that ranked third across all three state classes with 29 goals.

“We kind of made sure our defense always kept an eye on her,” Mount Vernon sophomore Kennede Nosbisch said after the Mustangs stymied the Comets, 7-0, in the final girls’ soccer game of the regular season for both teams Tuesday at the First Street Building Field. “We always made sure to step on her right away when she got the ball. We just made sure to never give her a chance.”

While Mount Vernon defensive stalwarts Kristen Elliott and Sammy Moss made it difficult for West Liberty to cross midfield, the Mustangs filled the opposing net. Nosbisch scored three times – including twice in a three-minute span early in the first half – while senior Isabelle Steele added two goals and one assist.

Juniors Grace Krapfl and Alina Merlak also collected second-half goals for Mount Vernon (9-6), which posted its highest goal total since scoring eight times against West Delaware on April 13.

“I was very excited,” third-year Mount Vernon Coach Kate Murray said. “Everything that we’ve worked on these last couple of weeks; the different combinations, checking the ball, those kinds of things. They actually applied, which is great to watch.”

Merlak, Moss and freshmen Sabrina Bleile and Emma Rodman also distributed assists for Mount Vernon.

West Liberty (9-7) had won eight of 10 games before Tuesday. The Comets are off until May 29 when they host a Class 1A regional quarterfinal against Mediapolis (6-6).

The Mustangs have a much-quicker turnaround as they open regional play at home on Thursday with a 2A quarterfinal against Washington (Iowa), which has won just once out of 13 contests this season.

“We’re going to treat it like any other game,” Nosbisch said. “Not have any pressure against us. Just go out and play the game that we played tonight.”
