IOWA CITY — Alec Wick is adjusting well to the extra attention.
After a first team all-state freshman campaign in which he scored 15 goals for the Iowa City Regina boys’ soccer team, opponents have assigned as many as four players at a time to slow the super sophomore.
“The key thing here for us right now is we have got to create more opportunities for Alec,” Regina Coach Rick Larew said after Wick scored three goals for the Class 1A second-ranked Regals in a 5-0 rout of No. 5 Iowa Mennonite Thursday at Regal Field. “What we did tonight, I was so pleased, was other guys started becoming aggressive offensively. Once they do that, then it has to open up for him.”
Wick scored twice in the first 18 minutes of the match, then earned his second hat trick of the season with a third score in the 73rd minute.
“Just play quick,” Wick said. “Two touches, get it off my foot and then look for good balls in from my teammates.”
Wick now ranks fifth in 1A and is tied for seventh across all classes with 18 goals through 10 matches. Last season, Wick was instrumental in helping Regina claim its seventh state title in 10 years by scoring two goals in the state-championship match.
This year, he is shouldering even more of the offensive load.
“I had to take a bigger role, but a lot of other people have, too,” Wick said. “We lost a lot last year, but we’re back.”
After five weeks at No. 1, Regina (7-3) dropped to second on Tuesday after losing to new-No. 1 Waterloo Columbus, 4-0, in the last of three matches the Regals played Saturday at Davenport Assumption’s tournament.
Eleven days prior, Regina defeated Columbus at home, 2-1.
“That gives us firepower,” Wick said. “It was definitely a fluke.”
