Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs made his mark on Mount Vernon. Many in town made their mark on him, too. Wirfs and his mother, Sarah, took The Gazette on a tour of his hometown, revisiting scenes around what essentially is the one square mile where he grew up. This story is a little about what can hold you back. This is mostly about what moves you forward.

Benton Community continued its strong campaign on the golf course.

The Bobcats extended a streak in the process.

Benton captured its third straight Wamac West boys’ golf title Monday at Tara Hills Country Club in Van Horne. Bobcats senior Ben Parmenter earned medalist honors with a school record 4-under 32.

The Bobcats are 27-3 and are eighth in Class 3A with a Wamac West best 165.94 combined adjusted average.

Benton Coach Jeremy Suiter said he was proud of the effort, which extended a divisional streak that includes a share of the title with Williamsburg a year ago. The Bobcats scored 148 this year, topping Williamsburg by 13.

“We played great at the divisional,” said Suiter, who led Benton to the 2017 Class 3A state meet. “It is a meet that we have been preparing for all year. This is the third straight year we have won the Wamac West Division, so it was great for the seniors to play well and accomplish that feat.”

The Bobcats returned five starters from last season, including Parmenter, first-team all-Wamac performer Jacob Heit and Nate Ettleman. The senior trio have contributed to the varsity lineup all four years.

Each contributed Monday. In addition to Parmenter, Ettleman was third with 37 and Heit tied senior teammate Cam Eggert with 41 for the team’s final score. Junior Jack McGovern was fourth with 38.

Parmenter set a nine-hole mark, carding an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole and a birdie on the par-3 No. 8. The eagle was set up by sticking his approach about 4 feet from the pin. The next hole opened with a tee shot a foot from the hole. Parmenter was medalist for the fourth time this year.

“He has been our No. 1 guy all year and has been solid at that spot,” Suiter said. “He is a player we can count on to bring in a great score every meet.”

The Wamac Super Meet will be held Monday at Saddleback Golf Course in Solon.

Williamsburg’s girls’ golf team repeated as Wamac West team champions as well. The Raiders carded a team total of 182 at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg. They defeated Independence by 14.

Williamsburg will defend its Wamac Super Meet team title at Gardner Golf Course on Monday.

Benton’s Rachel Maschino shot 41 for medalist honors.
