Alex Wiese helps Iowa City Regina complete trifecta against West Branch

No. 7 Regals hold on, 58-50, advance to 2A regional final

IOWA CITY — One of Iowa City Regina’s missions was to maximize Alex Wiese’s touches.

Many of them, she created herself.

Wiese was a force on the offensive glass early to stake Regina to a big lead, then the seventh-ranked Regals held off a late West Branch charge to win Friday’s Class 2A girls’ basketball regional semifinal, 58-50, at Regina High School.

“I really like to rebound. That’s kind of my thing,” said Wiese, a junior who had a double-double by halftime and scored her 1,000th career point Friday. “We just really wanted this one. We have a big group of seniors, and we wanted it for them.”

Regina (20-4) defeated the Bears for the third time this season and advances to Monday’s regional final against Danville (20-4), a 63-60 victor Friday over Mediapolis.

Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Riverside.

Wiese was at her best early, scoring the Regals’ first six points and posting 10 points (six on putbacks) and seven boards in the first quarter.

She finished with 26 points and 13 boards.

“We thought we had an advantage inside with Alex,” Regina Coach Jeff Wallace said. “We got some good looks for her. And her pursuit of the ball on the glass is excellent.”

Regina led the whole way. An 11-0 run pushed the advantage to 30-12 early in the second quarter, and the Regals appeared poised to rout the Bears (17-7).

But the Koenig sisters wouldn’t allow it.

Tatum Koenig (a senior bound for Bradley University) tallied 24 points and Sasha Koenig (a freshman) scored 13, all in the second half.

The Bears got within 52-48 and 54-50 late, but Regina’s Mary Crompton hit six free throws in the final 55 seconds to clinch it.

“We could have quit, and a lot of teams would have,” Bears Coach Jarod Tylee said. “I’m proud of how hard our kids played.

“Tatum has been a program-changer for us. Girls that weren’t crazy about basketball before, she made them love the game.”

Wiese’s boardwork staked Regina to a 37-20 rebounding advantage, including 26-9 in the first half.

An Illinois State University signee, Crompton added 16 points. Greyson Dumont and Kennedy Wallace scored eight points apiece, and Dumont recorded six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
