Cedar Rapids Washington wins Round 2 against Kennedy, 70-65

Round 3 comes in the postseason

CEDAR RAPIDS — Who is Cedar Rapids Washington’s best player? Depends on the day.

Most valuable? Tony Vis’ vote goes to Caitlin Riley.

“It always seems that when she plays well, they play well,” said Vis, the girls’ basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Riley played well — and shot well — Friday night. And the Warriors followed suit.

A pair of dagger 3-pointers by Riley gave Class 5A 13th-ranked Washington some separation, and the Warriors held off Kennedy, 70-65, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle at Washington High School.

“They were trying to guard us real close,” Riley said. “I got some good screens.”

Riley finished with six 3-pointers and a game-high 21 points as the Warriors (11-6 overall, 7-4 MVC) completed a season sweep between the teams.

They’ll meet a third time Feb. 17 in a Class 5A regional semifinal at Washington.

“It will definitely be another good game,” Riley said. “We’ll look at a lot of film, and we’ve got a lot of time to get ready for them.”

Riley was one of four Warriors in double figures. Isa Truemper added 14 points, Sammy Mia 12, Vanessa Eniola 10.

“We don’t have a lot of height,” Riley said. “It’s just toughness. We’re quick. We work hard, day in and day out.”

Kennedy (10-8, 6-5) cut a 15-point deficit to 46-45 early in the fourth quarter. It was 51-47 when Riley went back-to-back to open the margin back to 10.

The difference in the game was a 20-2 first-half blitz that gave the Warriors their largest lead at 23-8. It was 33-24 at intermission.

“Our kids never gave up,” Vis said. “If you’d have asked me there in the first quarter if I’d be happy if we gave ourselves a chance, I’m sure I’d have said yes.”

Hailey Dolphin paced Kennedy with 18 points. Auddie Alepra posted 17 points and 11 rebounds. Madison Friauf grabbed 14 boards as the Cougars owned a 47-38 rebounding advantage.
