DES MOINES — Capsules for Thursday’s games involving area teams at the boys’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

Class 3A semifinals

No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier (19-6) vs. No. 3 Glenwood (23-2)

Time: 2 p.m.

In the quarterfinals: Xavier got past pesky Marion, 67-60. Glenwood rallied from 18 points down at the half to stun Norwalk, 67-58.

Top players: For Xavier, obviously it’s Matt Mims and Jackson Joens. Mims poured in 32 points in the quarterfinals and has a history of clutch state tournament performances in his three years as a starting point guard. Joens had 14 points against Marion and averages 16.4 a game. Xavier will need a third scorer here ... Junior forward Christian Stanislav led Glenwood in scoring coming into this tournament (15.7 ppg). Senior guard Nate Mohr averaged 14 a game and is the Rams’ top distance shooter. Freshman Ryan Blum came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points in the quarterfinals ... Glenwood’s losses were to Atlantic and Omaha (Neb.) Skutt. Xavier has not lost to a 3A team this season and has won eight straight state tournament games over the past three years.

Class 4A semifinals

No. 2 Iowa City West (20-4) vs. No. 9 Waukee (20-4)

Time: 6:30 p.m.

In the quarterfinals: West had a workmanlike, 62-50 quarterfinal win over Muscatine. Waukee built a double-digit fourth-quarter lead and held on to beat Johnston, 60-58.

Top players: Everyone knows about West junior forward Patrick McCaffery, the Iowa commit who averaged 20.6 points per game this season. He had 17 in the quarterfinals, including 11 in the decisive fourth quarter. Guards Evan Flitz and Dante Eldridge combined for 25 points against Muscatine. Forward Seybian Sims was averaging 14.6 coming into the tournament ... Waukee will be able to match West’s size with 6-foot-7 Nathan Johnson (12.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and 6-8 Dylan Jones (10.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg). The Warriors generally like a slower offensive pace.
