CEDAR RAPIDS — Even with three wins in a row, Chris Robertson is looking for more out of his team.

“We’re just trying to find consistency,” the Linn-Mar boys’ basketball coach said after the Lions defeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 62-55, in the final game on Day 1 of the Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Center. ”I don’t think we’ve still found it yet. … I think we’re getting better. Our toughness is starting to show a little bit.”

Linn-Mar (6-4) needed a dose of toughness in the second half after the Cougars started the second quarter with an 8-2 burst and led at halftime, 36-29.

“We just knew we had to pick it up,” Linn-Mar junior point guard John Steffen said. “We were kind of lazy. You could tell they had more energy than us. Coach got on us to remind us.”

The Lions roared out of the locker room and outscored Kennedy in the third quarter, 16-7. With the game tied in the fourth quarter at 51-51, Steffen gave the Lions the lead for good with a drive to the basket.

“We had just talked about how they were being over-aggressive on defense,” Steffen said. “I started dribbling to my right and I saw the trap coming. I crossed back quickly and tried to get to the lane.”

After a defensive stop, Steffen drilled a 3-point basket that extended the Linn-Mar advantage to 56-51 with 2:33 to go.

“I was just feeling it from the bucket before,” said Steffen, who finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Linn-Mar senior Trey Hutcheson led all scorers with 23 points and now has 1,016 in his career. The Albany signee is the eighth player in school history to eclipse 1,000 points.

“He’s just been huge,” Robertson said. “The one thing we just want to see from him is come out and play with that edge every night. Just come out and dominate.”

Senior guard Greg Hall added 14 points for Linn-Mar.

Junior Jack Wetzel led Kennedy (6-4) with 17 points, while senior Trey Sheets chipped in 12.
