Last surge belongs to Taylor Zumbach and Anamosa in regional win over Mount Vernon

Raiders top Mustangs, 39-34, in 3A regional semifinal

ANAMOSA — What exactly happened there, at the end of the game?

“I don’t know,” Taylor Zumbach said. “The momentum of the game took over.”

And so did she.

Zumbach scored eight points in a 10-0 closing run, and Anamosa outlasted Mount Vernon, 39-34, in a Class 3A girls’ basketball regional semifinal Wednesday night at Anamosa High School.

“It’s just that refuse-to-lose mentality,” Raiders Coach Jack Leighty said. “We knew it was going to be a dogfight. We weren’t exactly in a position we wanted to be in, but we’ve been there before.”

Anamosa (19-4) advances to Saturday’s regional final opposite No. 1 Crestwood (22-0), a 67-30 winner Wednesday over Waukon.

Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Oelwein.

If the Raiders pull the upset — and it would be a big one — they will advance to the state tournament for the first time in program history.

It looked fairly bleak when Mount Vernon’s Kristen Elliott hit a 3-pointer to give Mount Vernon (16-7) a 34-29 lead with 4:35 to go. But the Mustangs didn’t score again, and Zumbach led the Raiders back.

Her offensive rebound and basket made it 34-31, then she hit two free throws with 3:47 to go to bring the Raiders within a point.

Then came the play of the game. Zumbach missed a deep 3-pointer, but out-hustled everybody for the loose ball after the shot and drove for the go-ahead basket.

“It was a close game, and I had to push and do everything I could,” she said.

After a Mount Vernon turnover, Zumbach scored on another drive to make it 37-34. She had a chance to salt the game away from the free-throw line, but missed the front end of a one-and-one — her only miss in seven tries.

No matter. Sophia Wilt got the rebound and converted for the clinching basket.

Usually a post-oriented team, Anamosa was led by its guards Wednesday. Zumbach finished with 14 points, and Taylor Hinz posted seven points, five assists and five steals.

Elliott led the Mustangs with 15 points.

Down 19-12 early in the third quarter, Mount Vernon scored 12 straight points to gain the lead, and Elliott’s stepback 3-pointer make it 29-23 headed to the fourth.

“It was one of those things, we did some things we usually don’t do,” Mustangs Coach Matt Haddy said. “Give credit to Anamosa; they made plays when they had to. It wasn’t our best effort, but we gave ourselves a chance.”
