5A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie 52, Linn-Mar 36

Prairie coach Josh Bentley knew his team had to defend well in Tuesday night’s road test against a Linn-Mar team that loves to shoot the 3-point shot. And defend they did.

Prairie kept the pressure on Lion shooters most of the night and took advantage of a 12-0 run to start the second half en route to a 52-36 Mississippi Valley Conference win at Linn-Mar High School.

“I thought our defensive energy tonight was solid with our main 1-through-8 rotation,” Bentley said. “The girls got into film study and really understood what they had to do and what we needed to do in our rotations. That was a big part of the game.”

Maquoketa Valley 58, East Buchanan 40

Sam Wall scored 25 points, and Maquoketa Valley’s 2-3 zone befuddled East Buchanan early in a 58-40 Tri-Rivers Conference West Division girls’ basketball triumph at East Buchanan High School.

The Wildcats (6-1 overall, 2-0 division) scored the first 10 points and held a double-digit lead most of the way. This isn’t a team that resorts to zone often.

“We’d played it once all year,” Moenck said. “We’d been fouling a lot, so we decided we needed to switch it up tonight.”

Much like its game this past Friday night against Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Prairie trailed much of the way, only to clutch up in clutch time. A 3-pointer by Trey Hutcheson to begin the fourth quarter moved Linn-Mar ahead by seven, 46-39.

But the Hawks pecked away at their deficit and finally went ahead for good, 51-49, with just under four minutes to go when Logan Burg put back his own drive miss, was fouled and sank the free throw. Still with a precarious four-point edge, Burg drove the lane again with 2:30 left, missed his initial shot but found a way to get a tip home in traffic.

Hutcheson had a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, though Prairie (2-1) seemed to lock down on him down the stretch.
