CEDAR RAPIDS — They lost, but they’re still No. 1.

Iowa City West remained atop The Gazette’s latest boys’ basketball rankings in Class 4A despite a rare blemish incurred last week. The Trojans lost at Cedar Falls, 55-54, their first defeat since February 2017 and their first loss to an Iowa opponent since December 20, 2016.

That came against Cedar Rapids Prairie, and West avenged that loss later last season and again this past Saturday night in the Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Cedar Falls (10-3) was a big mover in the 4A rankings this week, jumping from 10th to fourth. Two of the three Tigers’ losses have come to out-of-state teams on back-to-back nights.

The rest of 4A’s top 10 remained the same, though there was a bit of shuffling with Johnston losing twice and dropping from second to 10th. Des Moines Hoover is second this week, followed by Sioux City East, Cedar Falls and Des Moines North.

Cedar Rapids Xavier (10-3) continues to be No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Oskaloosa, Glenwood, Norwalk and Mount Pleasant. West Delaware (11-4), which has won six in a row and eight of nine, is a newcomer in the 3A rankings at ninth.

Class 2A remains extremely strong at the top, with Western Christian (13-0), Cascade (16-0), Van Meter (14-0), Treynor (14-0), East Marshall (13-0) and South Hamilton (15-0) all undefeated and ranked first through sixth, respectively. Treynor was the biggest mover this week, going from ninth to fourth after an impressive win this past weekend over 3A No. 8 Sioux City Heelan.

The top three in 1A also are identical from a week ago. Grand View Christian (14-0), North Linn (17-0) and Remsen St. Mary’s (14-0) are followed by Algona Garrigan and Dunkerton in the top five.
