Center Point-Urbana rolls for Philip Klett's 200th win

Rivalry Saturday: Stormin' Pointers handle Mount Vernon, 61-43

CEDAR RAPIDS — Center Point-Urbana’s window remains open.

Wide open.

“We’re blessed with a good youth program here, and when I get them, there’s talent,” CPU Coach Philip Klett said after the Class 3A fifth-ranked Stormin’ Pointers jolted Mount Vernon early and rolled to a 61-43 Rivalry Saturday girls’ basketball victory at Kohawk Arena.

Klett earned his 200th career victory as the Stormin’ Pointers (1-0 overall, 1-0 Wamac Conference) led from wire to wire.

“He’s a really good coach,” junior Adrianna Katcher said. “He pushes us to get better each day, and we respect him a lot.”

Klett has just begun his 13th year as a varsity coach and owns a 200-91 record, including 165-77 at CPU. He was at Clark County (Mo.) for two seasons.

CPU lost a bundle of senior talent after advancing to the Class 4A state semifinals last year. Now, there’s new talent, and the Stormin’ Pointers look like a player in the 3A championship derby.

A reserve last year, Millikin scored CPU’s first 11 points, and the Stormin’ Pointers led, 11-1, midway through the first quarter.

“She’s a good shooter,” Katcher said. “She’s got great court vision. I’m not too surprised with what she did.”

The margin grew to 28-6 in the second period, and was at its largest at 47-21 in the third.

Katcher led all scorers with 18 points, hitting 7 of 9 shots, and contributed seven rebounds and six steals.

Her accuracy wasn’t isolated; the Stormin’ Pointers connected on 26 of 47 shots (55.3 percent), and the starters were 22 of 33.

Freshman Ryley Goebel came off bench to supply nine points. Rylee Clark added eight.

Annie Rhomberg paced Mount Vernon (0-1, 0-1) with 11 points. Summer Brand added 10.
