Cedar Rapids Washington jumps on Linn-Mar early, moves to 3-0

Caitlin Riley nets 21 points, 9 rebounds in Warriors' 60-43 victory

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Washington Warriors are a puzzle with potential.

Lots of potential.

“We have all the pieces,” Caitlin Riley said. “We’ve just got to put them together.”

Riley knocked down five 3-pointers and registered 21 points and nine rebounds, and Class 5A 13th-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington handled Linn-Mar, 60-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at Washington High School.

Sammy Mia added 19 points, and freshman Hannah Stuelke was good for 15 more as the Warriors improved to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the MVC.

“When we get (Sydney) Mitvalsky back (from injury) next week, we’re going to have five starters that could average in double figures,” Washington Coach Chris James said. “The big question is, can we defend?”

They slowed the improved Lions (2-3, 1-1) enough, forcing them into 10 first-quarter turnovers. The Warriors ran to a 16-2 lead in the first four minutes, and that early surge turned out to be the difference.

Riley and Mia have been among the leaders of this program for quite some time. The addition of Stuelke might be the difference as the Warriors transition from good to great.

“She’s tremendous,” Riley said. “In my three years here, I haven’t played with anybody that skilled. She’s got good height (6-foot-1), and she can play like a guard.

“She’s a really good addition.”

Down 33-16 at halftime, Linn-Mar closed within 10 points on two occasions in the third quarter. The Lions are far better than last year, when they went 3-19 in Nate Sanderson’s first season.

“The girls want to be more competitive,” Sanderson said. “The fight is there. The gap between us and the better teams (in the MVC) isn’t nearly as wide as it was last year.”

Macey Miller paced the Lions with 11 points. Keegan Krejca tallied 10.
